Government officials urge use of new name for current flu outbreak

Posted:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - U.S. officials have expressed concern that the name "Swine Flu" may cause unnecessary anxiety about pigs and pork products, so the federal government has asked people to call it "H1-N1" virus instead, because it is actually a sub-type of influenza type A and this outbreak appears to have no connection to pigs.

However, you're still going to hear the phrase "Swine Flu", a lot, because, despite pleas from the U.S., the World Health Organization says it will continue to use "Swine Flu" to describe the current outbreak.
