OKLAHOMA CITY (KCBD) - The No. 2 Lubbock Christian University Lady Chaparrals completed their best Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament finish in a tournament that was never finished.
Afternoon showers in the Oklahoma City metro area cancelled Monday's SAC Tournament champion game(s). All conference tournament games in the NAIA must be completed by Monday's end, so with the announcement of Monday's cancellation, it has been determined that Oklahoma City University will receive the conference's lone automatic bid to the NAIA Softball National Championship in Decatur, Alabama.
Oklahoma City was the lone team in the SAC Tournament without a loss, which qualifies them to receive the automatic bid. Since LCU is the No.2 team in the NAIA, they may likely receive the top at-large bid for the tournament. The Lady Chaps were set to go in today's championship game(s) after four straight tournament wins following an opening round loss to Oklahoma Baptist. LCU won all three games Sunday by shutting out their opponents, with Alyssa Gutierrez winning a pair of the shutouts in the circle.
The Lady Chaps (51-5) will now await Tuesday's announcement by the NAIA, as they announce the 32-team field for the 2009 NAIA Softball National Championship. The championship begins May 14th with pool play action. Each team will play one game a day for the first three days accounting for pool play, with the top team in each pool advancing to the eight-team double elimination bracket, beginning May 18th.
