City Now Accepting Applications for Citizens University

Spend the winter semester learning about your municipal government. The City of Lubbock is offering a ten-session course entitled City of Lubbock Citizens University. The purpose of the course is to promote an understanding and awareness of the city’s structure and services, and to explore the roles that citizens and the city organization have in maintaining an effective municipal government.

The class will be limited to 25 participants, and class members will be selected by a review panel composed of both City and community members. Selection will be based on the strength of the application, civic leadership potential, and diversity of the applicants.

  • No fee will be charged for the course.
  • Deadline for applications is December 18, 2002.
  • Class membership will be announced no later than January 6, 2003.
  • The first session is Thursday, January 16, 2003.
  • Following are the class schedule and sessions by topic. The 3-hour sessions will be held on Thursdays from 6:00 – 9:00 P.M.
  • There will be no classes held January 30, February 20, March 13 or April 3.
  • Graduation Luncheon and City Tour will be held on Thursday, April 17 after completion of the class schedule.
  1. Overview of City Government Thursday, January 16 (City Manager, City Attorney, City Secretary, Council Office)
  2. City Finances and Internal Services Thursday, January 23 (Finance Services, Budget, HR, IT, Mgt Services)
  3. Community Services: Thursday, February 6 (Parks, Libraries, Civic Center, Health and Community Development)
  4. Planning and Transportation Thursday, February 13 (Planning, Codes, Building Inspection, Emergency Management)
  5. Police Services Thursday, February 27 and Communication/Legislation
  6. Economic Development Thursday, March 6 (Reese Center, Market Lubbock, LIA)
  7. Fire Services Thursday, March 20
  8. Public Utilities Thursday, March 27 (Electric Utility, Streets/Drainage Engineering, Traffic Engineering)
  9. Public Works Thursday, April 10 (Water Utilities, Solid Waste, Streets)
  10. Graduation and City Tour Thursday, April 17

No classes on January 30, February 20, March 13 (Spring Break) or April 3
