It's the biggest shopping weekend of the year and local stores are prepared to take on mobs of people looking for the best deals, but Lubbock Police are urging you to think about more than just your shopping list.
Thousands of people across West Texas will go to the South Plains Mall to do their Christmas shopping, but all the holiday hustle and bustle can be distracting. That is why the mall is stepping up security to make sure you and your family shop safely this holiday season.
Chances are most of us don't have all of our Christmas shopping done yet, and if you plan to finish it up at the South Plains Mall, you and your family are in good hands. "We always at South Plains Mall have an eye on security. It's very important that our shoppers feel secure any time of year, but certainly during the holidays when we have increased crowds," says Beth Bridges, Marketing Manager.
Bridges says more than 150,000 people will visit the mall this weekend. So make sure you keep an eye on your belongings and your kids. "Sometimes it's easy to get separated, so just make sure you know where they are and if you should get separated be sure to instruct them to either look for a mall security guard or go into any store and have the store call mall security. It's very important that your children know how to find you and get back to you," says Bridges.
And whether you're shopping inside or making your way to your car, plenty of police and security officers are on hand to help out. "If you see anything suspicious or feel funny about anything come back into the mall, and have any store clerk or guest services call mall security and they can help you with anything," says Bridges.
If the walk back to your car is too far or it makes you a little nervous, take a ride on the mall shuttle that is being offered once again this year. "It's just an added convenience for our shoppers if they have to park a long way away. It's easy to take the shuttle and not have to walk so far, but then when it's dark outside it is nice to have that shuttle available so that you don't have to feel uncomfortable walking in the dark," says Bridges.
The shuttles will run during mall hours this holiday season. One more tip you might want to remember if you're taking packages to your car and going back in to do more shopping, you will want to make sure and put those bags in the trunk out of sight.
