LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - On Thursday the man charged in a deadly case of road rage received 50 years behind bars after pleading guilty to murder. Police say 25-year-old Steven Torres shot and killed 24-year-old Daniel Green back in October.
The two did not know each other, but police say Green may have accidentally backed into Torres' pickup, while leaving the Town and Country" at 19th and Milwaukee. They say Torres chased and shot Green, causing his vehicle to crash into a utility pole. Green was pronounced dead at the scene.
On Thursday Torres agreed to a plea bargain and Green's family attended the proceedings. Daniel Green's mother, father, sister and brother were in the court room this morning. Thursday was the first time they were face to face with their loved one's killer.
October 16, 2008. A day that has forever changed a family's life. The day 24-year-old Daniel Green feel victim to what police call an act of road rage. "This isn't something that is supposed to happen people are suppose to control themselves and that didn't happen this time unfortunately we were the ones affected by it. Unfortunately everybody has realized that and we have had support from the community and that helps that it does affect everybody," said sister Emily Green.
The family faced 25-year-old Steven Torres as he pleaded guilty to murder and received a sentence of 50 years behind bars. "I just really didn't have a lot to say to him," said father Lynn Green. "All these months I wondered what I would say or how I would feel when I was face to face with the man that killed my son and I think was prepared enough, it was hard to see the man that took the life of my child," said mother Gala Green.
Family members described to Torres the kind of person Green was, someone who will always be missed. "He could see good in just about anybody and like my wife said if someone needed something that he had money, shirt, clothes, he would give it to them and wouldn't hesitate, if someone was in need he would give what he had to help somebody else in need," said Lynn.
"It's nice to have this chapter closed and hopefully it does bring closure that we don't have to have this drawn out any further than today it's done with so we are just hoping that it does help us with the healing process," said brother Jeremy Green.
Family members told Torres they hope he would ask for forgiveness from God, but that they were not ready to forgive him yet.
