LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Doctors in Dallas have come up with a diet plan that is so extreme patients are required to check in with them several times a week.
It's pretty simple; all you eat is 800 calories a day. That's four protein shakes, prescribed by doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center. "The first week is really hard," said weight loss patient Sherri Rudden.
"We will also get an estimate of their metabolic rate, which tells us how many calories they need in the course of the day to maintain their weight and as long as they are under that, they are gonna lose weight," said Dr. Eve Guth, an internist.
Doctors designed the weight-loss program as a last option before bariatric surgery. Insurance requires those patients to follow a six-month diet program anyway before surgery. And with this, Dr. Guth says many are successful and end up not needing the surgery after all.
