Discrimination Charges Take Tech One Step Closer to Court Battle

In New Orleans Tuesday, a federal court heard arguments to decide whether or not Texas Tech can be sued for discrimination. Tech attorney's argue the school is exempt from such claims, but the U.S. Department of Justice says that Tech is liable since it receives federal funding.

The discrimination claim is being brought by two former female professors who allege unfair treatment at the pharmacy school. This latest allegation of discrimintation comes on the heels of a recent demonstration by law school students demanding greater diversity.

So how does Texas Tech compare to other university's? NewsChannel 11 did some research and found that Tech is not all that different from it's neighbors. Currently at Texas Tech, of the 1,226 faculty, 1,021 are White, 20 are African-American, 53 are Hispanic, and 71 are Asian. At the University of Texas, 2,254 are White, 84 are African-American, 172 are Asian, and 135 are Hispanic.

A decision in the federal case is not expected for several weeks.
