GM closes 1,100 dealerships

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - One day after Chrysler announced it was cutting a quarter of its dealers, General Motors is putting more than a thousand Chevy, Buick, and GMC dealerships out of business.

GM gave the bad news to its 1,100 dealerships by FedEx Friday. That's 40 percent of GM stores, but those dealerships sell just 7 percent of all the GM vehicles - many as few as 35 cars last year.

GM will wind down the 1,100 stores thru next year, buying back unsold cars. President Obama's spokesman said without this week's cuts, every GM and Chrysler dealership might have been forced to close.

No word yet if any South Plains dealerships will be affected.
