Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, Texas - Despite shooting a 2-over 73, No. 17 Texas Tech's Nils Floren remains tied in fifth place at the NCAA Men's Golf Southwest Regional in Austin with a 1-over 143 after two rounds. He is one of three Red Raiders still among the top ten.

Chris Ward also shot a 73 and stands at 2-over and in eighth place, while Brian Scherer is tied in ninth place at 3-over. Garrett Merrell is tied in 11th place at 4-over, while Santiago Rivas is tied in 48th place. Texas' Lance Lopez leads the event by four strokes over the second-place golfer after firing a 2-under 69 Friday to go along with his opening-round 68. Floren is six strokes back.

"I thought we played well today," Texas Tech Head Coach Greg Sands said. "Our attitude is good and we are focused on winning. Everybody is playing solid golf and they have a strong mentality and a lot of confidence."

Four teams shot rounds higher than their opening rounds Friday, including the Red Raiders, who opened the tournament with a blistering 2-under 282 and lead the field by nine strokes entering the second round. The Red Raiders' second-round score was high enough to allow Texas to take the lead on their home course. The Longhorns fired a 1-over 283 and surged past the Red Raiders on the final three holes of the round, carding three birdies and a bogey, while Tech posted four bogeys and a birdie on holes 16, 17 and 18.

No. 24 Texas (576) leads the event by two strokes over Tech (578), while No.8 Florida (580) enters Saturday's final round within striking distance of both schools. No. 30 UNLV (585) and No. 5 Stanford (593) are in fourth and fifth places, respectively, while No. 41 Lamar (594) is in sixth. No. 45 Michigan (596) and No. 32 California (596) are tied in seventh place as No. 49 Texas-Arlington (598) and New Mexico State (598) round out the top ten. Mississippi State (602), Virginia Tech (608) and Jackson State (650) are 11th through 13th.

"Obviously, we want to win the regional, not just finish among the top five and advance," Texas Tech Head Coach Greg Sands said. "We're setting our sights on trying to win. If we play solid golf tomorrow and be real competitive, we have a good opportunity to win. It could come down to the last few holes."

The final round of the 54-hole event begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m. Live scoring is available throughout the tournament at www.golfstat.com>. Texas Tech, Texas and Florida will be grouped together for the final round and will tee off at 9:40 a.m. CT

The top five teams from the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio, May 26-30.
