17 Year-Old Homicide Resurfaces

The death of a three month-old Smyer baby 17 years ago is resurfacing in a Levelland court room Monday. The boy's father, 40 year-old Robert Sharp, is accused of murder. Sharp says he was trying to stop his son, Matthew from crying by bouncing the him on his knees, but the baby started to have a seizure and was taken to the hospital where he died about two weeks later. Matthew's death was ruled a homicide, but no charges were filed. The case was not pursued as prosecutors did not think they had enough evidence to convict sharp.

In January of this year, the baby's body was exhumed and questions arose concerning overlooked head injuries. Sharp is currently in the Hockley County Jail, awaiting the trial. Jury selection begins Monday in Levelland.
