Senator Hutchison visits Lubbock to talk Ports to Plains

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison was in the Hub City Tuesday to meet with officials about the Ports To Plains Project. Lubbock is the home of the Ports To Plains Coalition. That's because when it's complete, the Ports To Plains highway system will connect Mexico to Canada via Lubbock.

While the Senator was here, we also asked her thoughts about President Obama's announcement of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor, Hutchison finds some of Sotomayor's statements quote: "troubling". The Senator quotes Sotomayor as saying federal judges can change U.S. Policy.

"I want to make sure that a person has the philosophy that they are not elected. They do not make law. But they understand that their role in the balance of powers is to interpret laws to make sure that they adhere to the Constitution," says Hutchison.

The President nominates a Justice, but Sotomayor must still get Senate confirmation before taking that office.
