LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The family of a Texas Tech graduate who died in a tragic boating accident 6- years ago had to experience the loss of their daughter for a second time.
Laura Putnam, 23, died in a hit and run boating accident on Lake LBJ in May of 2003. It took two weeks to find her body. A San Antonio real estate agent was eventually charged in her death.
Only a few days after the sixth anniversary of that tragedy, a burglar hit Putnam's parent's home in Aledo. Among other things, the suspect stole Putnam's ashes. Her family told KTVT in Dallas they came home Thursday and realized they lost their daughter again.
Then, in a surprising turn of events an anonymous call to a local newspaper led authorities to an oil well site near the Putnam's home. The urn containing their daughter's ashes was wrapped in a plastic bag, left so searchers could find it.
