NEW MEXICO (KCBD) - An employee of the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office shoots and kills a man about 15 miles east of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office says 48-year-old Raymond Romero Jr. was staying with his grandfather in Carnuel. Authorities say just after 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon Romero went outside to confront a man who was trespassing on private property. Investigators say the victim, who they believe was homeless, pulled out an axe and threatened Romero. That's when Romero fatally shot the man.
Sgt. Mark Kmatz says, "We treat it just like any other shooting that results in death. We're going to investigate it and see what it turns out to be, whether it's self-defense, or homicide. We're going to investigate them all the same." Romero has not been charged, but the case is headed to the district attorney's office for review. The victim's name has not been released.
