LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Throughout the month of June, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is conducting a data collection operation at 2,026 locations across the Lubbock District's 17-county service area, including Lubbock County.

"The operation will collect traffic counts for various "on-system" roadways-roadways maintained by the state-during a 24-hour period," said Stacey Young, TxDOT pavement engineer.

Statewide, traffic count operations are conducted yearly for a variety of purposes other than determining average daily traffic on a roadway, Young added.

"This year, TxDOT is conducting a simple traffic count operation, but tube counters can range from those that only count cars to tubes that can detect vehicle type and weight," Young said.

TxDOT uses the traffic count data to develop pavement design standards, follow traffic patterns and make other improvements to the Texas transportation system.
