Area Boy Dies After Car Accident

A South Plains boy is dead after clinging to his life for two days. On Wednesday, NewsChannel 11 told you about a car accident on the 5800 block of South Avenue Q. Four year-old Travis Schoonover was injured when the Ford Probe in which he was a front-seat passenger collided with a tractor-trailer.

The Probe's driver, 29-year-old Heather Stephens of Slaton, was treated at University Medical Center and released Thursday. Travis died at UMC Friday. The truck's driver, 38-year-old Jorge Luis Gonzalez of Miami, was not injured in the collision. Reports say Gonzalez was attempting to turn left from Avenue Q onto 58th St. when the Probe collided with his truck.

Investigators determined that Gonzalez failed to yield the right of way. Travis was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
