Southern Cal quarterback Carson Palmer is the winner of the 2002 Heisman Trophy. He's the first west coast Heisman winner since Marcus Allen of 1981. Palmer garnered 242 first-place votes and 1,328 points in winning comfortably over Iowa QB Brad Banks, who finished second with 1,095 points.
Penn State running back Larry Johnson was third with 726 points, followed by Miami running back Willis McGahee with 660 points and Miami QB Ken Dorsey with 643 points. Palmer is a senior.
He's the fifth Southern Cal player to win the Heisman, but the first quarterback. He joins fellow Trojans Marcus Allen, Charles White, O.J. Simpson, and Mike Garrett, all Southern Cal running backs who won the Heisman. Palmer led the 10 - 2 Trojans into an Orange Bowl berth where they will play Iowa, led by runner-up Banks.
