LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Battle lines are being drawn for the next redistricting fight in Texas, even before the 2010 Census. The Plainview Daily Herald quotes its sources as saying house District 85 in West Texas is among the most at risk.
Currently District 85 does not include Lubbock but it surrounds Lubbock on three sides. It used to be held by former House Speaker Pete Laney of Hale Center. Now it's held by Joe Heflin of Crosbyton. Lubbock Representative Delwin Jones is Chairman of the House Redistricting Committee. He says we won't know if District 85 really is in danger until after we get final census numbers. But, a House District that used to be representative of about 128,000 Texans will now soon need a population of 160,000 or more to justify its existence.
Delwin Jones says, "Probably at least three seats will disappear because to get an extra 34,000 in one of our districts out here you need to add several counties."
If West Texas really does lose three house seats, places like Dallas or Houston will get them.
