Backflow Prevention, what is it and what does it do?
Backflow, simply put, is the unwanted reversal of flow thru a water system. A Backflow Prevention Assembly prevents this reversal of flow.
Now, why is backflow DANGEROUS? Actually, backflow (back-pressure or back-siphonage) is more than just dangerous, it can be deadly! Let me give you an example. Home owners put all types of chemicals such as pesticides and fertilizers on their lawns multiple times during any given season. When the home owner turns on their sprinkler system to water the lawn the chemicals get mixed into the water. Once the system shuts off the water standing on the lawn has the potential to re-enter the water system thru the sprinkler heads. If there is no Backflow Prevention Assembly installed on the system the chemicals can contaminate the water entering the home. When you turn on your faucet to get a drink, you end up drinking the chemicals you put on your lawn. There is also a chance that the chemicals could contaminate the main water supply for your entire block, therefore puting your neighbors at risk of serious illness or even death.
