Thousands of children end up in the emergency room because of toy-related injuries each year. Many of those injuries could be prevented if children learn how to play safely. That's why the South Plains Trial Lawyer's Association offers toy safety seminars to Lubbock children every December. Here are a few tips the children learned.
- Make sure you match the toy is appropriate for the age of the child you are buying it for. The labels should be on the box. If there is not an age recommendation, beware.
- Watch to for battery operated toys for children under eight years old because batteries may leak, overheat and explode.
- Watch out for toys with fur or hair because children can swallow that.
- Watch out for toys with small parts. You can use a toilet paper roll to measure if a toy is too small. If it fits through the toilet paper roll, it can be easily swallowed by a child.
- Watch out for toys with strings longer than six inches which could strangle young children.
- Watch out for toys with sharp edges like plastic swords. Recommend that the children play with them in slow motion.
