LUBBOCK, TX - Back in May of 2008, federal, state, and local officers raided the home and businesses of Tahoka school board member Joe Calvillo, Jr. On Thursday, Calvillo, his wife Clara Calvillo, and Santos Salinas Saldana all turned themselves in after being charged with organized crime.
Earlier this week the three were indicted by a Lynn County Grand Jury. This all stems from an investigation that started more than a year ago.
Joe Calvillo, Jr. is currently a long-time member of the Tahoka school board and his wife Clara Calvillo serves as a member on the Tahoka city council.
All three are charged with felonies, and right now it's unclear the relationship between the Calvillos and Santos Saldana. Lynn County Attorney Donnis Scott tells us this case has been turned over to the Attorney General's Office in Austin. She says Lynn County only handles misdemeanors and not felonies.
The felony indictment stems from a 2008 investigation into Joe Calvillo's home and businesses. He owned a bail bond business, and the Lucky Sevens Game Room. Before being shut down, they were both located in Tahoka.
We talked to the superintendent of Tahoka ISD, and he tells us our phone call was the first he had heard of the arrest, and that Calvillo is still on the school board.
The Tahoka City Manager has heard of the arrest, and says Clara Calvillo is still a current member of the city council. He tells us the city is waiting for more information before any action is taken. He says they have never dealt with anything like this before.
