New device may relieve back pains without surgery

Posted:

A lot of patients who suffer from back pain may not need surgery after all thanks to a new device called the X-Stop.

"I was walking bent over because that would relieve the pressure on the spine. I had really bad pains down my buttocks and hips and all the way down both legs to my calves, so I was really uncomfortable," says Reisman.

X-Stop is the only FDA approved device for alleviating lumbar stenosis, a common cause of back pain as we age. Dr. Sergio Gonzalez-Arias a Neurosurgeon adds, "As the bones degenerate, the discs degenerate, the disc space collapses, the opening where the nerves exit as you see here gets smaller and all that encroaches in the nerves."

The X-Stop spacer is used to decompress the constricted area without cutting bone. The tiny device is simply placed between the bones in the back. The implant requires just a small incision and about a month of physical therapy. Studies show it can get rid of back pain in about 85% of the cases. The best candidates for X-Stop are patients with mild to moderate stenosis age 50 and over with good bone density. So, if you think you might need some help for back pain, ask your doctor about the new X-Stop implant.
