Treasurer Search Committee Meets For First Time in Lubbock

A city treasurer search committee consisting of people who do not work for the city, met for the first time Friday. Committee members say they are looking for someone who will be in charge of finance, investments, accounting, payroll, purchasing, risk management and internal audits. In other words, someone who is highly qualified and trustworthy. "I would like to see the person be a certified public accountant. I would like it to be someone with fair amount of experience within the governing sector and outside the governing sector," said Chairman Mike Cunningham.

In 1984, city council eliminated the position of treasurer and passed the duties to the Director of Finance.

Here's a list of the people on the committee appointed by Mayor Marc McDougal.

  • Mike Cunningham, CPA
  • Kevin McMahon, CPA
  • Steve Krier, Tax and Business Lawyer
  • Jim Brunjes, TTU
  • Dr. Robert Freeman, TTU Accounting Professor
  • Richard Portwood, CPA
  • R.J. Givens, Realtor
  • Suzanne Baker, CPA
  • Mike Weiss, CPA
  • Kent Moore, United Supermarkets
  • Mike Cortinez, CPA

City Manager Bob Cass oversees the committee. The committee's next meeting is set for January sixth. They hope to hire someone by June.
