LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A study published in the Journal Experimental Biology and Medicine says experts have found a new source for potentially life-saving stem cells.
We already know the umbilical cord can be used to harvest stem cells for blood disorders like sickle cell anemia, but there are a limited number of cells there. Now, a new study finds the placenta also provides stem cells, but in a much greater supply.
Researchers at Children's Hospital in Oakland have found that you can even extract and grow a healthy supply of stem cells from placentas that are discarded anyway after birth. The researchers have developed a method to safely harvest placental stem cells and their patent is pending.
