Overton Hotel and Texas Tech team up to offer unique experience to students

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - In one month the Overton full service hotel and conference center will open for business.  The hotel will also have a new partnership with Texas Tech to give students a unique experience.

When the Overton Hotel opens its doors, hotel guests won't be the only ones moving in. Students from the Texas Tech Restaurant and Hotel Institutional Management program will also have a place there. The hotel and the university will partner to give students hands on experience. Students will take their Hotel Operations class in a classroom on the second floor of the hotel as well as participate in a lab there. "They get to work with our trained team in housekeeping, maintenance, front office, accounting, back of the house, all throughout the hotel. So they get to work with the people, to see exactly what they are doing," said hotel general manager, Hunter Carmichael.

From the front of the Overton Hotel you can see the Texas Tech campus. Those involved with the class say the close proximity makes it ideal for students who hope to enter the hotel industry.  Students like Kourtney Dunnam hope to take advantage of the new partnership. "I think it's a really unique opportunity for all the students because it will be the biggest hotel that we have in Lubbock that is able to work with us, and really propel all of our careers to learn at a 4-star type environment," said Dunnam.

The hotel says they benefit as well. "Any time you have people who want to do this as a career in your hotel as line level associates or students training to be managers, it's a benefit to the hotel," said Carmichael.

Students will help hotel employees starting next month, with hope the experience will give them a competitive edge in the job market after they graduate. Next semester only one class will be offered at the hotel, but they hope to offer more in the future.
