LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Police and EMS responded to reports of a "vehicle vs. pedestrian" accident near 82nd and MLK just before 4 p.m.
Witnesses tell NewsChannel 11 that the driver of a blue pickup drove off the road at East 82nd Street near King Avenue, and into a squash field where he reportedly began doing doughnuts. The pickup struck a man in his early 20's, as he was working in the field.
"I was just passing by and I saw all kinds of dirt," said Lorenzo Hernandez. "I just pulled over and as soon as I pulled over, he pulled over right there whenever the other employee said 'call 911, call 911. He's injured. He's injured. He's been hit!!'
The victim, John Ybarra, 23, was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries.
The suspect, Billy Green, 53, refused to get out of his truck, so authorities were forced to break a window to forcibly remove and arrest him.
"We're looking into whether or not alcohol was involved, whether or not any other intoxication was involved. (We have) a lot of questions, (like) why he left the roadway," said Captain Greg Stephens, Lubbock Police Department. "We have probable cause for several offenses, which prompted his arrest."
Police have blocked off East 82nd Street from King Avenue to MLK Boulevard, until they have finished processing the accident scene.
