A West Texas sailor has died in Afghanistan.


CANYON, TX (KCBD) - A West Texas sailor has died in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense says 21-year-old Darren Ethan Tate of Canyon died July 8th.

He was an "Aviation Ordinance-Man Airman" serving at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the USS Iwo Jima, but deployed to the base as part of a security team. The official statement does not say specifically how he died but does say it was "non-hostile causes".

The Associated Press says he died of pneumonia.
