A key South Plains Cotton industry leader is calling it a career. Wendell Wilbanks, area Director of Lubbock's U.S. Department of Agriculture Classing Division retired Friday. For the past 40 years, Wilbanks has worked for the USDA, grading each bail of cotton produced here on the South Plains. Farmers must have their cotton graded before they can sell it.
Wilbanks says that what he will miss the most about his job is the people. "I started in Austin and its been a great career with all the people in the industry and in the South Plains," said Wilbanks.
The USDA has not hired anyone to replace Wilbanks, but he says he is confident it will be someone who will be good for this area.
