Five Red Raiders named track scholar athletes - KCBD NewsChannel 11 Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas -The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has named five Red Raiders as 2009 Division I Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Scholar Athletes.

Nathan Lowry, who graduated in May, earned all-conference honors in the 110M hurdles for the second year in a row. He graduated with a 3.93 grade-point average and will be attending the Texas Tech University Health Science pursuing his doctoral degree. It is the second year in a row that he has been honored.

Four Lady Raiders were named to the prestigious list as two were honored for the second time.

Amanda Alley earned All-Big 12 honors for placing second at the Big 12 Outdoor Championships, which was her second Big 12 award of the year. The junior had a successful season coming off a knee injury just one year before. She compiled a 3.75 GPA in her career so far.

Freshman Terra Evans turned head throughout the season. She was a two-time All-Big 12 honoree and was the only freshman to make the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100M. The speedster finished the year with a 4.00 GPA.

Three-time All-American Patience Knight earned her second-straight honor as a scholar athlete. Knight won both the indoor and outdoor Big 12 shot put titles and sports a 3.95 GPA.

Junior Ozie Okolie was named a scholar-athlete for the second-year in a row. The junior finished second at the Midwest Regional Championships to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Student-athletes must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
