NEW YORK CITY (KCBD) - After weeks of planning, a television wedding in which the elements were decided by online votes, Wednesday was the big day. Texas Tech graduate Leigh Daniel married Nick Cordes live on the Today Show in New York City.
It was like a fairy tale Wednesday morning, and the bride felt it too. "I feel like a princess. I just feel so pampered," said Leigh.
The same goes for the bridesmaids - except for getting up so early. "We got to bed at 1 a.m. and up at 3 a.m. We got about two hours of sleep last night," said the bridesmaids.
And what a wakeup call when the bride's get-ready room is suddenly invaded by reporters! "US Weekly is here." About a dozen different news, magazine and web cameras showed up to cover the Today Show wedding of Leigh Daniel, from Lubbock, and Nick Cordes, from Ohio.
The bride's mom, Jan Tilley, was there and calmer than you'd expect after what she's been through this summer. "I have 4 kids. None were married and now two of them are married - in 3 weeks!" said Tilley.
But with the Today Show planning the details for this one, "We'll be at the hotel to make sure you get in the right place," said a show producer, there wasn't much for the family to worry about - except for that last hug before the wedding. "You'll be blessed," said dad.
It wasn't as crowded, but just as calm in the groom's room. "I'm excited to see her walk down the aisle and take her hand put the ring on it. It's going to be awesome," said Nick.
The plaza was transformed into a vineyard themed wedding, complete with wine barrels and friends from the wine country back home in Lubbock - like the Millers and the Hays who were waving from behind the crowd.
The preacher came first, Leigh's grandfather from Marble Falls, then Nick, wearing what America voted for - a seersucker suit, and Leigh's mom was followed by Nick's parents.
Little sleep or not, the attendants held up strong - Tabette and Jason, Lindsey and Matt, Steve and Jenny - and finally, the bride, who was truly a princess in her $4,000 gown.
The vows were persona. "In the beginning we were best friends. We moved on to training partners and I'll be most proud to call you my wife," said Nick. "Nick I feel so blessed to be standing here in front of my best friend," said Leigh, when it was her turn.
"It was very romantic to me. I get teary at every single one to be honest with you. I'm a sucker for weddings for sure," said Meredith Vieira.
Nick, you may kiss your bride," said the minister. After the kiss he announced, "It is my joy to present to you Mr. and Mrs. Nick Cordes!"
It was beautiful, but brief. I guess you could say these former track stars and Olympic hopefuls were anxious to get to the finish line. "You ever see a couple running down the aisle at the end like that?" we asked Matt Lauer. "That was a first, that was a first," Mat replied.
"I felt sentimental. I didn't tear up," said Al Roker. "You're tough guy, right?" we said. "No, I'm not tough, guys just react differently to these things than women do," he replied. "Matt teared up," we mentioned. "Yeah well, Matt's kind of a girl," Al joked.
The Plaza Hotel, built in 1907, was reopened last year after a $400 million renovation. The wedding party is staying there, for about $600 a night. The reception was held in the ballroom, and we're told it's one of the most expensive places for a reception in Manhattan.
It was decadent. Not just the décor, or filet for $130, but Martina McBride provided the music. "The Today Show chose my song as their theme song - ‘I Just Call You Mine.' So it just made sense to wrap it up by singing it at the wedding," said McBride.
The reception, not including Martina, was about $100,000 - another wedding gift from the Today Show.
Remember that other Daniel family wedding three weeks ago? The newlyweds, Leigh's brother, Jay Daniel, and his wife Kylie, were also in attendance. "Does this compare to your wedding three weeks ago?" we asked. "I would say so. We got married at First Baptist and then went to the Baker Building. We had a really good time," said Kylie "The Baker Building in Lubbock?" we asked. "Yes. It's pretty similar," said Jay.
Congratulations to Lucky Leigh and her Prince Charming.
