LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - NewsChannel 11 continues to learn new information about an alleged drug trafficking ring in Hockley County.
Details come after former Hockley County Chief Deputy Gordon Bohannon appeared before a federal magistrate Monday for his detention hearing. The 53-year-old remained in the Lubbock County Jail Monday night, awaiting a decision on whether he will be allowed to bond out pending trial.
Authorities arrested Bohannon on July 10th in Levelland. He faces 11 charges, accused of aiding Bobby Froman, 54, the alleged leader of the methamphetamine drug ring. Now we're learning just how long investigators suspect the relationship had been going on.
That information comes from the detention proffer, or offer of proof, by the prosecution for why Bohannon should remain behind bars pending his trial. It's a nearly 300 page document. In it, authorities say Bohannon's role in the conspiracy was to protect and further the methamphetamine operation. They say it spanned over at least six years.
In a phone conversation recorded on April 20th of this year, Bohannan is heard calling Froman who authorities say was at a Hobbs, New Mexico casino. Bohannan says "I caught them (expletive) watching your house again." Court papers state he accurately identified two Texas DPS surveillance vehicles.
On May 19th of this year, investigators report that Roswell Police contacted the Hockley County Sheriff's Office concerning Froman's involvement in a narcotics investigation. Bohannon is heard vouching for Froman, but he doesn't tell the investigator that Froman is an informant, though that's what he told the district attorney earlier. The papers state Bohannon admitted that he told Froman about the inquiry, saying "I know this was not the right thing to do."
