A warning label on hot dogs?

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - If one advocacy group has its way, the next time you go to a ballgame and get the traditional hot dog, you'll get a health warning on the side.

Cancer Project, a nonprofit vegan advocacy group, has filed a lawsuit against major hot dog manufacturers. They say processed meats have been linked to colorectal cancer, and consumers should be warned of this risk before eating them. Studies show the preservatives used for foods like hot dogs are high in nitrites, which can be converted into cancer-causing chemicals during digestion.

However, there hasn't been a clear consensus that processed meats cause cancer, and meat industry representatives say the lawsuit is unfounded. One thing is certain: eating an occasional hot dog isn't a "strike" against your overall health.
