Texas Lawmakers Begins 78th Legislative Session with Massive Budget Deficit

On Tuesday Texas Lawmakers converged on Austin with a $9.9-Billion budget deficit staring them in the face. The day started in the house with Tom Craddick of Midland getting sworn in as the new speaker. Craddick is the first GOP House Speaker since 1873. He succeeds Democrat Pete Laney of Hale Center.

In addition to trying to recover billions from the budget, the 78th Legislature is also facing a homeowners insurance crisis and possible reforms when it comes to malpractice lawsuit awards. But, Governor Perry has said the legislature will not create any new taxes.
