LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Move over Equal, Splenda and Sweet and Low there is a new zero calorie sweetener on the market, it's called Truvia.
The newest sugar substitute comes from Rebiana, which is an extract of the Stevia plant. "Stevia is the hottest new sweetener that's come out and everyone's very excited about it because its all natural it comes from a plant and you can actually find this plant at your local farmer's market," said Judi Wilcox, a registered dietitian.
Stevia is actually 250 times sweeter than sugar. One packet of Truvia equals 2 teaspoons of sugar, and since Pepsi and Coke helped develop this new sweetener, it is expected to appear soon in some of their sodas. However, if you have diabetes or any problem with kidney function, you may want to talk to your doctor before using Truvia.
Earlier studies indicated Truvia may aggravate kidney trouble, but company research disputed that and the FDA has since approved the Stevia extract for use in food and beverages.
