Lubbockites tour new jail

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - County leader's hosted tours of the new Lubbock County Detention Center Saturday. The run-through lasted about two hours for each group, and for safety reasons participants had to wear a hard hat for the entire tour. The facility is designed to minimize the number of officers required to oversee a large number of inmates.

County commissioners say they're glad to see people interested in where their tax dollars are spent. Construction is basically complete, but crews are still testing systems. "We're very close to being finished. It's the security, electronics, and fire alarm systems that we're checking and double checking and testing and retesting. That's something that's so critical. This is a maximum security detention center, so it's critical that it's not just good or that it works, it's got to be perfect," said County Commissioner Bill McCay.

Around 60 people took advantage of the tour. McCay says they hope to move into the new jail sometime around the first of the year.
