TTU national championship in chess

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - It's a first for Texas Tech University, a national title in chess.   Hungarian international master Gergely Antal, a senior at Texas Tech, took the 2009 title during the United States tournament of college champions.   The Knight Raiders chess team member beat the defending national champion from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Texas Tech hopes the national championship will help produce more chess champions in Lubbock.   The Texas Tech University Chess Park is now open.  The outdoors, central-park-inspired chess tables are located between the Student Union Building and the Library.   It's one of the first of its kind parks at a major U.S. university and was partly funded by an anonymous donation.
