LUBBOCK, TX, (KCBD) - Shaken baby syndrome accounts for more than 50 percent of the non-accidental injuries in children and the consequences can be devastating. The demonstration on our segment Healthwise at Five Monday shows how quickly damage can happen after what usually begins with a baby who won't stop crying.
"And they've tried everything, pacifiers, bottles and they get so frustrated that they pick the baby up by the arms or the legs or the shoulders and they shake it, and see what happens, the baby stops crying. But look at all the little red areas, these are the parts of the brain that are bleeding and all these areas of the brain cause the baby to be able to walk, to talk, to swallow, it controls the entire body," said Lynette Wilson, the Executive Director of the Family Guidance and Outreach Center in Lubbock.
Wilson says education is the key to preventing shaken baby syndrome. That's why she takes this demonstration to civic groups and area schools starting in the 4th grade. If you'd like more information on this, call the Family Guidance and Outreach Center of Lubbock at (806) 747-5577.
