7 Lubbock County fire crews called to battle flames

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A large fire continued to burn at a Lubbock County recycling plant near Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport Monday night. Flames broke out around 6 p.m.  Asphalt and wood shingles caught fire, along with some other debris.

Fire teams from seven different agencies were called to douse the flames.  The large number of crews caused authorities to close the southbound frontage road along Interstate 27 from Keuka Street.

New Deal Fire Chief Randy Teeter tells NewsChannel 11 a worker was at the pile, when a problem with his vehicle sparked a gasoline fire. Teeter says that worker was taken University Medical Center with injuries.

Teeter says the flames spanned a couple hundred yards long, and a hundred yards wide. Crews from New Deal, Shallowater, Wolfforth, West Carlisle, Abernathy, Idalou, and Lubbock were on the scene, along with bulldozers from Lubbock County.

Teeter expected they'll have crews out there for quite a while. "We're probably going to be out here for a while; we were on the last one for about three weeks, and I've got a feeling we're going to be here for a while on this," Teeter said.

The same pile caught fire in 2002.  Teeter remembers a fire in June of 2005 and NewsChannel 11 covered a smaller fire there in 2006.

With so many fires, Teeter says crews have created battle plan.  Monday night crews believed they had the flames contained.  At the high point, Teeter says they had 35-units and 70-crew members battling the blaze.
