LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Plainview hosted its 3rd Annual BBQ cook-off Saturday to help show support for one of its local athletes.
After graduating early from Plainview High School in 2006, Alex Ortiz packed his bags and moved to Milwaukee to train at the Olympic Training Center for speed skating. Three years ago, Ortiz made up his mind that one day he will stand on that podium.
"No I had never ice skated in my life prior to, you know, taking up skating," said Ortiz.
After Ortiz's 1st year of competitive speed skating, two things stood in his way to the Winter Olympics. "I'm three seconds from making the Olympic trials for the 2010 Olympics...I'm looking for sponsorship at this time. If you're interested, you guys could help out," said Ortiz on NewsChannel 11 in May.
After his plea, a town he knew very well stepped up. The City of Plainview came together to sponsor Alex Ortiz. Many Ortiz supporters also wore Alex Ortiz T-shirts, which is another fundraiser from the city.
The 2010 Olympics is a goal for Ortiz, but now he is training for 2014 winter games.
