Lubbock County Sheriff David Gutierrez Resigns

LUBBOCK TX (KCBD) - Lubbock County Sheriff David Gutierrez has stepped down.

After 11 years serving as Sheriff of Lubbock County, Gutierrez resigned and will now be a member of the Texas Pardons and Parole Board.  He held a surprise press conference at 5:00 p.m. Monday in Sam Medina's courtroom at the Lubbock County Courthouse.

County Commissioners, sheriff's deputies, friends and family members filled the courtroom. Gutierrez was given a standing ovation from the citizen's he helped serve after announces his resignation.

Gutierrez says he had several opportunities to leave Lubbock County and he couldn't pass this opportunity up, accepting an appointment by the Governor. He says he received the call about the position about two weeks ago once he got back from his trip to Spain.

Gutierrez resignation as Sheriff is effective September 12th. On September 14th he will begin his journey as a state parole board member.
