LUBBOCK, TX - Don't think binge drinking is just a problem for the college crowd. A report out Monday in the Journal of Psychiatry says it's staggering, the number of older folks who may not even realize they are jeopardizing their health by binge drinking.
The study found that over 20% of men and 9% of women in the 50 to 64 age range meet the criteria for binge drinking. That's described as consuming five or more drinks at one time.
The risks associated with binge drinking are always high, but are especially dangerous among older adults who may be taking medications that counteract with alcohol or have medical conditions that worsen when drinking, such as problems like liver disease, stroke, neurological damage, high blood pressure and cardiovascular trouble.
