LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - You can support two local heroes by attending the "Lone Cowboy - Concert for Heroes" on Saturday, August 22nd.
The concert, featuring Michael Martin Murphy, will be held at the Cactus Theater, 1812 Buddy Holly Avenue at 7:30 p.m.
The event will raise money to cover medical expenses for Spc. Reas Axtell and Tanner Cook, both of Idalou. Axtell lost both legs during a rocket attack in Iraq in August 2007.
Cook was a senior football player at Idalou High School when he was injured during a playoff game last season. Cook initially suffered a minor head injury, but his condition deteriorated after suffering three subsequent strokes. While Cook has already completed six months of full-time therapy, he will now spend up to another six months receiving cognitive training at Transitional Learning Center.
Danny Koch is coordinating the event on behalf of his employer and sponsor, Caprock Healthplans. While some money has been raised for Axtell and Cook, Koch said financial support is now needed for their rehabilitation.
Koch hopes the concert will raise $50,000 for Reas and Tanner. The show will open with local musician Tori Vasquez. Michael Martin Murphy's performance will follow. Attendees will also have the opportunity to bid on numerous items during a silent auction.
Tickets are on sale for $35 and $50. To purchase tickets, call the Cactus Box Office at 762-3233.
Any donations can be made to the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Foundation at 1301 Broadway, Ste. 101, Lubbock, TX 78401-3227. The checks should be designated for "Lone Cowboy - Concert for Heroes."
