Stores prepare for tax free weekend

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Texas legislators estimate shoppers will save around $66-million this weekend.  Many stores in the South Plains Mall are bringing in extra help Friday to prepare for the crowds.  In fact they say Tax Free Weekend is one of their busiest weekends of the year and this year it's not just clothes, but school supplies as well.

It's the only time of year when you can get all your back to school shopping done and not have to worry about being charged sales tax.  "It's a good chance to come out and save an extra 8%," said Beth Bridges with the South Plains Mall.

And while most families have felt some strain of the nation's economy, they look forward to getting a break. Bridges says this weekend will be busy, perhaps the busiest of the year. "Retailers are just really trying to be aggressive and trying to get shoppers out to buy their items so this weekend is no exception," said Bridges.

Most clothes and shoes are on the list of tax exempt items, but this year Texas Legislators expanded the eligible items to include school supplies, which makes Staples on Slide Road excited to be a part of the shopping spree. "We are expecting to have quite a few people in the store we have to get fully staffed to handle the traffic that's going to be coming in," said Staples Store Manager Greg Vasquez.

On Monday all public schools in Lubbock will start classes, so this weekend is a perfect time to get your school necessities tax free. "Anything under $100 basically most school supplies 80%-90% of school supplies such as paper, notebooks, glue, scissors, and stuff like that," said Vasquez.

But as you head out this weekend, just prepare yourself for crowds. "The stores are ready there are plenty of people to help and just have a little patience, come out with your family and just try to enjoy the shopping," said Bridges.

For some stores Tax Free Weekend kicks off Thursday night at midnight. At the mall they have extended hours this weekend. Friday and Saturday they are open from 9am-9pm and Sunday from 12pm-7pm.
