LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - We told you a couple days ago that Lubbock's unemployment rate is up slightly. It's at 6.1 percent for July. Now here's the good news.
Those same statistics from the Texas Workforce Commission show that Lubbock created jobs compared to June and Lubbock also created jobs compared to July of 2008. In July, 135,800 people in the Lubbock statistical area had a job. In June, it was 135,100; so, Lubbock created 700 new jobs from June to July.
In July 2008, there were 135,300 people with a job. So, comparing July with one year ago, Lubbock has created 500 jobs. It just hasn't created enough jobs to keep up with a growing labor force and that's why the unemployment rate has gone up.
