Lubbock County farmer puts frustration in field

By Ben Lawson  - bio | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - An unusual sign of protest has sprung up in Lubbock County, but you'll have to take to the sky to see it.  Once a year, Sam Bates plows over the weeds in a playa lake on his property, but this year, he left a little something behind. "I just had some free time," Bates said.

His want spelled out in the weeds, "Say no to Obama!"  "This is a sign of frustration," Bates said.  He tells NewsChannel 11 the reason behind the message is what's going on in Washington.

"You know, it's not so much Obama, but just some of the things he's done recently with the health bill he's trying to pass through, and it's just as much republican and democrats fault in the House and the Senate that won't stand up to some of the things. That's basically what's frustrated me," Bates said.

Bates never thought his dug out desire would be noticed by anyone other than a few pilots flying to and from Lubbock. "I thought, maybe some pilots flying from here to Dallas would get a good chuckle," Bates said.

Now, thanks to the help of a local crop duster, pictures of Bates' work have been shared across the Internet. "People I've run into said they've received it, but they didn't know it was my lake bottom," Bates said.

A former art teacher, Bates says it felt good to vent his frustrations in the field with a little creativity. "Once winter hits it will kill these weeds, and who knows, maybe next year I'll have something else," Bates said.
