Laughter is the best medicine

By Brittany Pieper  - bio | email

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -About 50 Lubbockites got together Sunday to have a laugh and improve their health. The free Laughter Yoga class is not about poses or stretches.  Instead, participants forced laughter while thinking about different things at Covenant Health System.

Laughter Yoga instructors say the fake laughter in the classroom helps participants to laugh about stressful real world situations. They also say the body doesn't know the difference between a fake laugh and a real laugh so either way it stimulates the body with Dopamine. "Dopamine is the feel good neurotransmitter for everybody, so it makes everybody feel better," said instructor Gita Fendelman.

First time participants said it worked out their diaphragm and helped relieve stress. "How to be more natural. How to be more childlike and not to take everything so seriously," said Sylvia Mirabal after the class.

A doctor in India started Laughter Yoga in 1995. Now, there are more than 6,000 Laughter Clubs in more than 60 countries. Covenant is currently working to organize a Laughter Club here in Lubbock.
