LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Plainview doctor is dead after he was hit by a semi truck near Paducah Sunday.

Dr. Bryan Peeler was only 47 years old and he leaves behind his wife and three young children. Co-workers remember Peeler as a devoted doctor, someone who loved his family, and always a friend. We were all literally sickened by that news," said President of the Medical Staff at Covenant Hospital in Plainview Dr. Larry Balzer.

"Sickened" is the only way Balzer says he knows how to feel. "It's just such terrible tragedy for a young physician like that with a young family to be taken so suddenly from us," said Balzer.

On Sunday night, Dr. Peeler and his wife were following each other in separate vehicles after a weekend trip. Paducah DPS reports they were traveling on U.S. 70 outside of Paducah in Cottle County, when they both decided to stop on the side of the road so one of their children could use the rest room. As Peeler was helping his young son, his wife saw a semi-truck approaching, and starting honking her horn at her husband. Peeler was able to toss his son out of the way before being struck and killed by the semi. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"All of a sudden a tragedy strikes and the whole world is different from that day on," said Balzer.

Peeler was getting ready to start a new practice in Amarillo. His last day at Covenant Hospital in Plainview was on Friday.
