LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Swine Flu vaccine is currently still in production, but nationwide the regular flu shot is be distributed early. Tuesday, many drug stores across the nation opened as flu shot clinics as well, offering protection against the seasonal flu.
Here locally, Walgreens say that they began giving the yearly flu shots earlier in the season than they did this time last year. Pharmacists expect a much greater demand for flu vaccinations as folks brace for what could be a very tough flu season.
In Lubbock, some people rolled up their sleeves at Walgreens to be some of the first to receive flu shots within a pharmacy. Joseph Young, the pharmacy manager at Walgreens on 50th and Avenue Q says, "It is exciting to be able to be, since we are a lot of times, the first line of healthcare. We get asked lots of questions about how to prevent the flu, but now we're on the frontlines giving vaccines to prevent illness and prevent disease."
CVS says that they do not know when they will begin making flu shots available in their stores.
Again, these are routine seasonal flu shots, not the vaccine to prevent Swine Flu or H1N1 which is not currently available. The H1N1 vaccine is expected to become available sometime in October.
The Center for Disease Control advises that individuals receive both vaccines this year to avoid any strain of the flu.
