LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - On Thursday, the annual "Walk With Pride" event gave over 600 needy children in Lubbock the chance to pick out new school shoes at no charge.
The Lubbock Association of Realtors (LAR) donated $10,000 and teamed up the South Plains Food Bank to give vouchers to the needy families. The shoes were provided by three different Payless Shoe Stores around Lubbock.
Lines formed clear around the corners of the stores with children waiting to get their free shoes. "I like mine because they're colorful and in style," said Pauline. Toddler Rihanna walked around showing everyone her new Dora the Explorer shoes. "Shoes, new shoes," she said over and over.
Walk with Pride Chairman Liz Smart chatted with the kids as she bagged up their new shoes and socks. Choked up with tears, Smart described some of the kids that came to get new shoes. "You see kids come in with shoes they've worn for years, shoes two sizes too big, some without shoes," she said.
Smart said another kid came in with shoes held together by super glue that gave out right before he picked out his new pair. "It's really rewarding knowing there's a need out there we can help," Smart said.
Next year Smart hopes they can raise enough money to give 1,000 pairs out to local needy children.
