In Texas news, a supervisor at an Amarillo prison died Wednesday after an inmate slashed his throat. Police say it happened Wednesday morning while inmates were working at a shoe factory at the clements prison. Prison officials say 38-year-old Stanley Wiley died at an Amarillo hospital four hours after the attack. A prison spokesman says one inmate has been taken into custody, but they are questioning others. The Clements Unit was locked down for several hours.
What started as a peaceful protest turned into a violent demonstration in El Paso. About 1,000 high school students were protesting a change in schedules when some of them started throwing rocks and bottles at security guards. School administrators called nearly 100 police officers to the campus because of the violence. Police arrested about ten people. About 20 students and seven officers were treated for minor injuries. The situation is now under control.
A Houston teen took the stand to testify against her stepmother, the woman accused of running over and killing the teen's father. Witnesses say 17-year-old Lindsey Harris screamed and struggled to get out of the car as Clara Harris allegedly ran over her husband in a hotel parking lot. Harris is charged with murdering her husband after allegedly catching him with another woman at a Houston hotel. If convicted Harris faces up to life in prison.
A Central Texas elementary school teacher has been arrested and charged with trying to buy a child. The teacher was employed at Ysleta Elementary, northwest of Austin. Police say the teacher and a friend approached a homeless woman and asked to buy her child. They allegedly offered to give the woman a used car and $2,000 for her 14-month-old son. Police arrested Roberto Cortez and his friend Alicia Alvarado. They both face up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if they are convicted.
