LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Groundwater underneath Municipal Hill is contaminated according to city of Lubbock public records. TxDOT has an office at the property in question and TxDOT has been working to clean it up since 1998.
City records say there are five chemicals that make the water unsafe (benzene, dichloroethane, methyl t-butyl ether, chromium, and pentachlorophenol). TxDOT has asked the city for a special designation. If that designation is approved, TxDOT would have to clean up the water enough to protect the environment. But TxDOT would not have to clean it up to drinking water standards.
City records do not say if TxDOT created the problem or inherited it from a previous owner.
